What is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder is also known as adhesive capsulitis, a shoulder condition characterized by stiffness and pain in your shoulder joint. Symptoms are gradual and can worsen over time. Before long, you can’t move your shoulder like you once did. Reaching for an item on a high shelf or wearing clothing like a bra becomes difficult becomes difficult. When your condition becomes severe, you might not be able to do everyday tasks that involve shoulder movement.
What causes Frozen Shoulder to develop?
It is not clear why some people develop a frozen shoulder. Women are more likely to develop it if you are between ages of 40 to 60. Other risk factors include traumatic shoulder injury, prolonged immobility to the shoulder or post-surgery, especially after shoulder reconstruction or mastectomy). A common but little known relationship is with diabetes.
What types of treatment are available?
Medication – Anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to reduce pain and swelling. Nerve supplements may also be useful.
Steroid Injections – Cortisone, an anti-inflammatory medicine is injected into the shoulder joint to reduce inflammation and to facilitate movement.
Physiotherapy – There are specific stretching and range of motion exercises for the shoulder will help restore motion. This is done under the supervision of a physiotherapist.
Surgery – If patients do not respond to conservative treatment, the doctor might suggest surgery to help stretch the scar tissue. Common methods include manipulation under anaesthesia and shoulder arthroscopy.
